I did a bit of work on both rose paintings today, adding a yellow wash on "Hide and Seek II", and another varied color wash to emphasize the different color tendencies in the foliage patterns of "Beauty Queen".
Hide and Seek II,

Beauty Queen, Watercolor on Arches 140# Cold Press Paper, 7"h x 5"w, WIP 2
As ever, these are intriguing. I look forward to seeing more.
ReplyDeleteSO beautiful Arena. :) I LOVE seeing your wet into wet washes. :) ANd after I read what paper you used I had to chuckle because I've always thought the way you use color was similar to Zoltan Szabo. :) And thanks so much for your always kind comments on my posts. I don't tell you thank you enough. :)
ReplyDeleteHi Crystal! I love love love your show on Artist Helping Artist channel! I just have to say that again!
DeleteMy first watercolor teacher ever actually studied with Zoltan Szabo for 14 years, being his studio assistant when he was travelling around teaching. One treasure she shared with me were literally hundreds of old video footage of his workshops around the country -- how he painted, what he told his students, what materials he used, etc. My first teacher, Rena Brower, paints on very very saturated wet paper with thick, juicy pigments and creates lovely semi-abstract floral and landscape paintings. I wish I have learned more when I was still in Indiana, but my level at that time was not equipped to absorb everything she had to offer to me. Nevertheless, before I left she gave me a list of great instruction books which kept me company to this day. I am eternally in debt to her for starting me on the right foot! If there is a trace of how Zoltan Szabo paints in my work reflected, I would be so honored since he is truly my hero for the master of this difficult medium...
I am babbling here -- just to say that your comments have made my day. Now I can have a night of sweet happy dreams... Of juicy wet washes...
